Road Trip To Minnesota

    Early this morning, Tom and I jumped in the car and headed off on our first long road trip to Minneapolis.

    I couldn't resist taking a photo of our car as we passed this super shiny trailer.

      We arrived in Des Moines, Iowa, the insurance capital of the world, just in time for breakfast.

      We went to the La Mie Bakery, which I had read great things about online and you could smell how good it was from the parking lot.

      I had the salmon omelette which was delicious and came with freshly baked bread.

      After breakfast we went on the hunt for this awesome sculpture in the Sculpture Gardens.

    We then got back on the interstate and headed north.

    Our second pit stop was Clear Lake, which was a really pretty town where @[192360124134426:Buddy Holly] played his last show and his plane crashed afterwards.

      We went for a drink at the Cabin Coffee Co. which was covered in cowboy kitsch.

      We sat on the saddle seats and sipped on our drinks.

    Afterwards we went down to the lake which was so peaceful. They do $12 steam boat rides which I want to come back for.

      We then went on the hunt to find the Buddy Holly plane crash site.

      The start of the trail was marked with a huge pair of Buddy's glasses.

    It was then full steam ahead to Minneapolis, which was so picturesque.

      We were hungry so we headed to Mickey's Diner in St Paul, which is know as the twin city, as it joins up with Minneapolis.

      The diner is open 24/7, 365 days a year and was opened in 1939, meaning that it hasn't closed for over 70 years. We got worried when we noticed that the parking lot was empty.

      I had the most amazing pecan waffle which made all the other customers gasp with envy when it was brought out.

      It was then time to check in to our hotel, which we'd book as a secret deal, so we didn't find out where we were staying until we had paid for it.

      When Tom saw the decor he said "if somebody lived here, we'd hate them".

      There was a lovely view out of the window though and we got a bargain on the place.

    After settling in, we headed out to explore downtown.

    It looks like a toy city with such a mix of architecture.

    We walked down to the riverfront which was really pretty. Everyone seemed to be biking, jogging or taking a segway tour.

      In the evening we headed to Matt's Bar, which is the home of the Juicy Lucy - a burger filled with cheese.

      The staff offer a warning with each burger as the cheese is molten inside.

      I tried a packed of pickled dill crisps as there was nothing vegetarian for me.
