I got a lovely little box of samples from The Bay Tree in the mail this morning and couldn't wait to test them out.

I also had two brand new ingredients to experiment with (fresh fennel and seitan), so I decided to attempt a meat-free crab salad for lunch. It worked really well and the seitan made the perfect crab substitute.

  4. Checkin at The Blackbird
    1. Edit

After work, Tom took me for a cocktail at Blackbird, where it was warm enough to sit outside.

I didn't realise they had such a lovely beer garden before today but it reminded me a lot of the ones in London.

Afterwards, we were very willing guinea pigs for a new CO+K feature called Date Night, where we're going to send our members to awesome restaurants, cafes and bars in their city to review and then make a recipe inspired by their night.

  6. Checkin at Byron Burger Lothian Road
    1. Edit

Formerly a burrito bar, Byron's new location on Lothian Road had opened a week earlier with a spacious new layout and hipster makeover.

The staff were so friendly as they showed us to our table and brought our drinks. I had root beer with a shot of The Kraken rum, while Tom tried one of Byron's beers.

Being vegetarian, we're sometimes a little stuck for options at burger restaurants, but the waitress told us that we could order any burger on the menu and they would replace the meat with their bean patty or mushroom burger.

    5. Edit

Feeling spoilt for choice, we decided to pick the most unique sounding burgers on the menu and a side of sweet potato fries which were so crispy and delicious.

And though I tried my best to make as many puns as I could, Tom won the cheesiest joke award of the night with:

"If I have a bee in my hand, what do I have in my eye? Beauty! Because... beauty is in the eye of the bee-holder!

    8. Edit

I ordered a Byronaldo topped with crispy bacon, cheese and Bovril onions, but made it vegetarian by replacing the bacon with mushrooms which worked really well.

    9. Edit

Meanwhile, Tom tucked into the B-Rex topped with onion rings, cheese, jalapeños and pickles. Perfect for anyone who likes their food a little spicy!

    10. Edit

Even though I was so full after our burgers, Tom couldn't resist ordering a peanut butter caramel sundae for us to share.

    11. Edit

With lost dog posters in the toilets, temporary tattoos on the tables and candy burgers to take away, it was the perfect location for a date night with your loved ones, friends or family!
