We packed up the Figaro and set off on our first Scottish road-trip this morning. Jenny & Rin were back from Japan, for their wedding on Sunday, and Kylie & Rob had flown over from Australia and they'd invited us to join their convoy up to Skye.

Our first stop was House For An Art Lover in Glasgow, which is Jenny's wedding venue for Sunday, to meet up with the others.

    2. Edit

It was a really pretty house with a gorgeous garden filled with art and flowers.

It was then time to jump in our cars and start the long journey up to Skye which would take us past Loch Lomond, Glencoe and Fort William.

Luckily Jenny had packed her gigantic road-map book of the UK so we didn't have to worry about getting lost.

  6. Checkin at Bonnie Braes
    1. Edit

When everyone started to get hungry, we stopped at Bonnie Braes for lunch which was an interesting cafe with thistle designs on the tables, toilets which sounded like they were haunted and deep fried mars bars.

    2. Edit

Kylie was excited to have her first Irn Bru of the trip and sounded like she was asking for a bottle of fine wine when ordering it.

Back on the road, the scenery started getting really pretty as we entered the highlands.

  9. Checkin at Eilean Donan Castle

Our next stop was Eilean Donan, the castle which was featured in the movie Highlander.

There was a wedding taking place and no-one around to sell tickets, so we were able to sneak across the bridge to the castle without paying.

    4. Edit

When we got back to our car, it was surrounded by tourists taking photos of it and peeking inside, which was something we were going to have to get used to for the rest of the trip.

It was then time to head across the bridge to the Isle Of Skye. Tom and I had both visited the island when we were little but couldn't remember anything about it. It was also the day that Princess Diana died when we visited, so everything was closed.

  11. Edit

A lot of the roads became single track on the island with sheep everywhere, so we had to be careful not to bump into any of them.

Tom and I then checked in to our Bed & Breakfast which was nice, with bunnies outside of our window, but we felt it was a little strange being asked where we were going and when we'd be back. It felt like living with our parents again.

  14. Checkin at The Gabbro Bar
    1. Edit

We regrouped later that evening and went for dinner in The Gabbro Bar at The Broadford Hotel where Drambuie whiskey was invented.

    2. Edit

Tom and I shared a falafel burger, which didn't feel particularly Scottish but tasted pretty good.

  15. Edit

The sheep were all sleeping at the side of the road as we drove back and Rin couldn't resist stopping to try and stroke them. I hadn't thought about how strange sheep must seem to people in Japan and how rare they would be there.
