  1. Checkin at Alaska Railroad
    1. Edit

We caught the Alaska Railroad from Anchorage to Fairbanks this morning, a 12-hour trip which would take us north through Denali National Park with lots of wildlife to be spotted.

The train had big comfy reclining seats and a carriage with a viewing dome, so it was the perfect way to see the Alaskan landscape.

The day started off rainy and grey, so we were worried we wouldn't be able to see much beyond the rain drops on the windows but it soon brightened up when the sun came out and amazing colours started appearing across the landscape.

We hadn't eaten since we were in New York yesterday, so we tucked in to stuffed French toast in the dining carriage. It was fun eating breakfast in front of all the stopped cars at the crossing.

Tom tried his first Bloody Mary and these were delicious. One of the waitresses sat with us for a while and chatted about Alaska. Did you know that Alaskans eat more ice cream than any other state?

The scenery was so pretty and the colours were amazing. The flowers bloom so much brighter in Alaska because of the longer days of sunlight in the summer and the guide told us that cloudy days bring out the colours even more.

We passed by a number of homesteads where people live off-grid. They rely on the railroad for getting to and from town and in the winer, there's only one train a month.

We spotted some moose, a bear fishing, reindeer and a couple of swans. I can't wait to see more wildlife when we drive back through the park in a couple of days.

  5. Checkin at Alaska Railroad Depot

We grazed on Alaskan snacks and 12 hours later we arrived at Fairbanks, where a super friendly taxi driver listed all the things we should see in Alaska and told us how to make clarified butter on the way to pick up our hire car.
