  1. Checkin at Prestonfield House
    1. Edit

Tom surprised me with a stay at Prestonfield House for our anniversary.

Hidden away behind Holyrood Park, in the shadow of Arthur's Seat, it's easy to forget that you're still in the city as you make your way up the long stately drive to Prestonfield House, with peacocks on one side and highland cows on the other.

Built by architect Sir William Bruce in 1687 as a rural estate, every room of this boutique hotel is lavishly decorated with art, tapestries and regal decor.

    5. Edit

Our room was everything we had hoped for with a giant velvet bed, bedside obelisks, thrones and even a giant gold crown resting in one corner.

There was a bottle of Prestonfield House's own branded champagne waiting on ice for us along with delicious nougat pieces.

Even the bathroom was as opulent as can be with red tiles, French toiletries and a gigantic roll top bath.

Once you tire of feeling like royalty in your room, there are a number of lounges you can retire to including the Whisky Room, Leather Room, Tapestry Room and Yellow Room.

We decided to play a fireside game of chess while sipping on cocktails in the cosy Tapestry Room.

In the evening, we went for dinner in Rhubarb, the hotel's gorgeous candle-lit restaurant.

To start, I had the red onion and stilton tarte tatin which came with a mulled cider dressing, pickled Granny Smith and cranberries. Tom chose the salmon pate, which was smoked with whisky and served with pickled onion oatcakes, blood orange, fennel and beetroot.

For my main course, I picked the artichoke & truffle strudel which came on a bed of wild mushrooms, leek gratin and barley risotto. Never one to turn down the fish, Tom had a fillet of hake with parsnips, herbs and a lime butter sauce.

Saving the best until last, we shared the chocolate mousse and a Bakewell tart which was topped with the most delicious star anise ice cream.
