• We went on the hunt for the Milk Way this evening and ended up seeing the most gorgeous display of the Northern Lights.
  • It was a really clear night with a million stars, so we jumped in the Fig and headed out to our dark-night-go-to-spot Barns Ness lighthouse, which is just outside Edinburgh.
  • I was sure I could see a faint green in the sky while we were driving out of the city but thought I was just being too hopeful and enthusiastic.
  • As soon as we arrived, we could see a strong green band in the sky which grew stronger and stronger.
  • At it's peak, the whole sky was so bright with green, white and pink. Tom thought it was quite creepy, like something for an alien invasion and I was so shocked that we were able to see them so clearly from quite far south in Scotland.
  • We watched the lights for about an hour and a half until my toes felt like they might fall off. Luckily we'd packed duvets, our teddies and a car picnic to help us warm up.
  • The solar storm continued when we got back to Edinburgh but the lights from the city made it too difficult to see. When I looked at my photos when we got back, I realised we had been watching the Milky Way the whole time too - just above the band of aurora!
